Overall

The ECX Ruckus 1/18 4WD RC Monster Truck is one of the most compact hobby-grade RC models on the market, and as our road test surprisingly attested, it’s also one of the fastest 1/18 scale RC monster trucks for under 160 dollars. And probably one of the best rc truck beginners.

This truck is by no means a toy, and ECX suggests that user age is 14 and above. The standard electronics are neatly packed inside the solidly-built chassis. All the cabling was nicely done, and it’s a joy to see the effort that the development team at ECX put in this truck to make it a real hobby-grade RC monster truck.

What’s in the pack

Included in the RTR version are battery pack, charger, and 4 AA batteries. The stock remote controller looks cool, especially the red brake caliper hidden behind the steering wheel. 2.4 GHz transmitter and receiver are now standard for most of the RC toys and almost all the hobby-grade RC models on the market. The most noticeable feature that makes this truck truly distinctive is the waterproofed electronics, enabling a joy run after the rain. Though we still suggest a full clean-up and lubrication after the water ride. Do not wash the car with or without the battery attached, since your truck will almost for sure short-circuit. Please refer to our earlier article on how to clean your truck after a run.

How about the look

Appearance wise, this is easily one of the most aggressive-looking compact RC trucks I’ve ever seen. The wheels rise almost to the same level with the body, allowing the truck with a low center of gravity, but also a relatively small clearance. But this RC monster truck doesn’t pass the same obstacles as larger trucks do, so the low clearance won’t be too big an issue anyway.

What’s underneath the body

It’s probably one of the most affordable 4wd 1/18 RC monster trucks on the market, and the shaft is hidden beneath the electronics. The four independent oil-filled shock absorbers look sturdy and ready to take on impact above its size.

Test Drive
Shocked was how we felt when we took this truck out for a spin. The acceleration was extraordinary, I was unprepared for the swiftness with which it reaches the top speed and had to go easy on the throttle. Do not be cheated by its size, this is a serious hobby-grade RC monster truck for sure.
The tires are sticky and offer excellent grip on paved and off-road terrain alike. We kick it up a notch by jumping the truck and testing its aerial maneuverability. Again we were surprised, thanks to the great weight distribution on the truck and the awesome power, its aerial performance was way above its counterparts in the same price department. The low clearance limits the truck’s ability to cross high bumps, but those challenges are saved for the bigger trucks.

Verdict
A must buy in this price range. Anyone would find joy out of this truck, and this is an ideal first RC monster truck for beginners. It sets the benchmark for the small scale RC monster trucks. Once again this is definitely one of the best rc truck beginners.
